Construction of the course was completed in 1936, and the location was chosen by Rudolf von Gelmini of Austria, who designed the course and oversaw construction. Thus, in 1937, the first official game of golf was played in Bled on the completed first 9 holes of the first golf course in the former Yugoslavia.
The grand opening of the course was scheduled for 10 July 1937, and the honour of the grand opening was to go to the Duke of Windsor. Sadly, this event did not even take place the following year, when all 18 greens were completed, as the course was unfortunately soon abandoned due to the start of World War II.
The royal history of the Royal Bled Golf Course is tied to the Yugoslav Royal Family Karađorđević, as the course was originally built at the request of the court, the Regent Prince Pavle of the Yugoslav Royal Family Karađorđević, the diplomatic corps and at the initiative of local tourism workers. Alexander Karađorđević, the former king of Yugoslavia, also had his own summer residence in Bled.
In 1972, the course was revived and extensively redesigned by the legendary Donald Harradine, who created one of the most attractive and famous courses in Europe. During the construction of the course, architect Donald Harradine showed those present the first golf swings and got them very excited about this game.
In 2014, Royal Bled acquired new ownership. This set in motion plans for the reconstruction of the course, led by Howard Swan, architect and owner of Swan Golf Designs.
The new owners, who wanted to upgrade and improve the course, undertook a spectacular transformation with the help of Swan Golf Designs.
In 2017, the King's Course was reopened after a two-year renovation. The course was extended to championship length, and at the same time the greens, tees and bunkers were also upgraded.
The most beautiful golf courses in Slovenia are therefore the 18-hole King’s Course and 9-hole Lake Course designed by Donald Harradine.
